6/12/2012

25 Comments

The time is right, it's now or never for the release of SpectraBeat.com.  The software, projector and website have finally come together to form what is hoped will be a new and fun experience for those who decide to build a SBPS projector.

SpectraBeat's SBPS free projector is by no means finalised. It will be developed further,and it will depend on contributions from users in order to improve its design and usability. Assist us in forming a community that will explore new uses for this laser publishing tool.

Create a job: pay a friend of yours to build the SBPS projector for you!

Please help spread the word - that a new democratic tool is at everyone's disposal.

Your success is our success.

++++++  UPDATE 18/11/2012 ++++++

Thank you all for the enthusiastic comments I have received. Any suggestions please send them on to info@spectrabeat.com
Time is marching on and the effort is now in making SpectraBeat Kits available in the early new year. This will be a small start but let's see how far we can make it go!

Mailing list will be up soon. You can add your email address at info@spectrabeat.com

I would like to share with you two videos on youtube of a very happy guy using SpectraBeat:

++++++  UPDATE 24/02/2013 ++++++

3D Printer has been ordered from Ultimaker.com. We expect to be able to deliver kits and ready made SBPS projectors in the near future.

Version 3.0 of SpectraBeat software and Android app are both in preparation for release.

++++++  UPDATE 02/07/2013 ++++++

Construction of fIrst prototype is underway and will be available soon. The plan is to 3D print our new LaserRumbler projectors; so they will be constructed on-demand and made available with personalised options.

Tell us what you think of the design. All feedback is welcome!

Cool project, I've been wanting to play with this stuff since I saw Lasarium in the '80s.
Any thoughts on making a kit?
It could be a Kickstarter project.
Could you use a silver coloured sequin instead of the mirror shard?
So many questions so little time.

Thanks for posting. If you find it also works with a sequin please let us know. Although the results obtained with a typical mirror (optically flat = a very small surface roughness of approx. 20 nanometers) will always be better, our aim is to make SpectraBeat as accessible as possible.

We will be making kits available in the near future.

I'm half way through constructing mine, but I am not seeing any movement in the mirrors or in the reflection of the light. When I hold it up to my ears I can hear the frequencies, but I can't see any movement in the reflection of the light. Any ideas?

Thanks for posting and building a SBPS Projector. Our instructions will be expanded upon in more detail as soon as is possible. A FAQ and troubleshooting page will be added.

Regarding your question, it is most likely that either
a) The scanner is over-damped at this point. You need to narrow the width of the hourglass shaped damping at its waistline. Use a nail scissors. The optimal width can be as little as 1 - 2 mm.
b) A dolby-surround or audio filter is active. Disable all extra audio processing and set equaliser to default.
c) The holes in the straw, supporting the graphite leads are way too large.

Best of luck!!

NB. To fix any mistakes during construction: Wood glue can be easily removed using a wet paintbrush. The water will soften the glue's surface. Using a matchstick and more water from the paintbrush, pick at the edge until water can seep under the glue. This will allow you to peel off the rest in one go.

Building one right now, very excited about it.

I am using it for a street art project for uni. I was going to use the text scroll option and thought that a cursive script text would be much more adequate than the provided blocktype text. I think i will create the whole thing myself, but is there a possibility to make the grid more narrow for that? I am guessing i will have problems merging the letters to words with a rectangular frame grid. (I hope you understand what i am talking about)

If i do go through with this, i promise i will send u the cursive alphabet i made!

That would be great! A few small bugs in the software related to the alphabet character creation have been fixed. New .exe version 2,21 is now available on the software download page. I have thought about the problem with characters that have a narrower footprint on a page and I will try fix it (I also need a more accurate type-setting for the PRO version). The new version is just a quick fixup to help you..I added some more horizontal lines. Will post some instructions on how to create, save and use a new character set. Don't forget to save the characters using the UTF (Unicode) number...it is shown at the top left corner of the Text Message box.

Good luck with building the projector. Ready made kits will be available soon. The 3D printer has arrived and is working like a charm!!

Hie!
This looks really really cool and I want to build one right away :)

are you going to release the code to the software? I would love to be able to tinker with it.

Thanks! Let me know by email if you would be interested in the 3D printed assembly kit we are currently building. The plan is to eventually release the code. The inclusion of a script language and control window will most likely come first because it supports the design idea of concentrating on making SpectraBeat as usable as possible for everyone (this includes people with no technical training).

Hey! I'd love to buy a ready made projector myself, how far are you from a finished project? What will the pricing be? And will you ship to Belgium/Europe? (btw maybe kickstarter is a better way to go ? )

Great! We will definitely ship anywhere in the world.

Yes, but instead of Kickstarter we are thinking of going with Indiegogo. So we will fund raise via Indiegogo, not necessarily for the LaserRumbler but instead to develop a version of the LaserRumbler that could be sold as a product for marketing/merchandise. The focus is to make SpectraBeat reach as many people as possible, so what better way is there than to have company X pay us for our projectors to then distribute them free, as merchandise, to as many people as possible? We like this plan, but we are open to other suggestions anyone may have. Please let us know.

Great news!

In the meantime, how can I get my hands on one of those laserRumblers earlier or do I have to wait for the indiegogo thing to start up and wait for the commercial version?

We have a 3D printer which is ideal for small scale production. So you definitely will be able to get your hands on a LaserRumbler real soon! In fact we will have several designs (i.e. functionality and look) to choose from or will even do custom made - 3D printing makes this possible.

Thanks! The android app is a stripped down version of the .exe version and it is central to the the LaserRumbler - since a mobile phone can be physically docked onto it.

I build the projector with speakers aprox. 7cm diameter, and it has a wide projecting angle . it works very well on small animations and single letters. i can run it on ca. 70fr/sec. till the picture gets a bit distored

Happy to hear that you find the information provided so helpful. Send us an email if you have any further questions. Personally, this is one my projects where I feel the urge to get back to it and finish it. According to youtube.com analytics, SpectraBeat videos have been watched in every country worldwide...so the message is getting out, but a next push is needed. Thanks again!

Can I just say what a comfort to find somebody who actually understands what they are discussing on the internet. You definitely realize how to bring a problem to light and make it important. A lot more people need to read this and understand this side of the story. I was surprised you're not more popular given that you surely have the gift.

Hi. Thanks a lot for your great work. Sir, in my opinion we can replace those fragile vibrating mechanism with orthogonal x-y axis mirrors attached to two small conventional stepper motor axles, and I think signal injection to just one coil of the motors do the same thing. Kind regards, Hamidreza Afsharnaderi.
